”Alright.. but for the sake of the article, can you please state your full name, age, occupation.” the man was very forma at the moment, she hoped he would relax. he had a notebook ready and a pen in his hand, along with a recorder sitting on the desk in front of them. He was clearly prepared. ”My name is Callista An Galvan, Calli… I am twenty-five years old. I am a photographer.. I own my own studio. I photograph several things; people, children, weddings, pregnancy… and so on.. I also photograph models.” she told him. He nodded is head as he checked over what he had written down beforehand. ”Where would you like to start?” The man simply asked, clearly whatever he wanted from her basic information was over. The interviewer was probably close to her age, only a few years older, she assumed. She noted his dorky, yet adorable black polka dotted bowtie, she wondered briefly if it was a hipster thing or if he really wanted to look snazzy with his bowtie for the interview. The question through her off, why would she want to start anywhere but the beginning? Starting at the end was just pointless and starting in the middle seemed silly and confusing. With a small smirk, that showed off her adorable dimples, she finally spoke. ”Perhaps the beginning would be best.” She wasn’t exactly thrilled about this, she didn’t want to do the interview, but he was a persistent man. he had called a few times in the last month, he was researching the effects of adoption and how being taken from the birth mother, at birth was distressful to the infant and wanted to know if it caused issues into adulthood. “Alright, would you mind telling me about your parents? More specifically your mother.” Callista looked puzzled for a moment, ”My parents or the people who share DNA with me?” she questioned. Okay, maybe she knew what he meant, it all started with them right? It was clear the man became suddenly flustered from her question. ”sorry… sorry… I meant your birth mother.” Calli smirked softly, her dimples showing again. ”I’m not sure what to tell you, I don’t remember my parents, my father died before my birth and I was taken from my mother as soon as I came out.” she said softly, not caring if it sounded horrible. ”I was born in Shangfeng, China, it’s a small farming community.” she paused as he wrote. ”My mother already had a son, he was three, and her husband, my father, died before they even knew she was pregnant…I assume you’ve heard of the one child policy in china?” she questioned. ”Well, she couldn’t afford two children… and I mean if you couldn’t afford to care for the second child or the tax that came with it, then you had to get rid of the second child.” she paused again. ”well, she couldn’t afford me, so she went through a private adoption agency.. she didn’t want to give me up to an orphanage…and that’s where my parents came in, they were alerted about a possible baby, they paid for my mother’s hospital bills and expenses for the pregnancy… to get me. After I was born, they did take me directly away from her, once I was cleaned up my mom insisted that she get to see me at least once, thanking her for me, it’s all they wanted.” her slim shoulders shrugged. ”Since it was China, they went through a lot of channels and hoops to adopt me, to bring me home… it took two weeks before they could leave the country with me..” she added with another shrug. The man nodded his head as he wrote, ”your adopted parents.. they’re a neurosurgeon and an elementary school principal, correct?” He questioned his research. Calli nodded ”Yes, when I was adopted, my dad was thirty-five and mom was twenty-nine… at that time dad was just starting out in neurosurgery and mom was a third grade teacher..” she confirmed the history of her parent’s work history. ”Dad just turned sixty and is one of the top neurosurgeons on the west coast.. and mom is fifty-four and has been a principal for the last five years..” she added. His head nodded again as he fixed his bowtie and pushed his thick glasses up his nose. ”Why did your parents decide to adopt instead of having their own child?” he asked. Calli wished she could just eliminate this question from the face of the earth. She really hated it. ”Well, I am their own child..” she stated simply. She had his attention, with a simple answer, he expected more than what she had given him. ”Legally, I am their… Biologically doesn’t matter.. They’ve been there since the moment I was born.. they went through hell to get me.. they’ve been through everything with me… literally everything you would expect a parent to be there for their child… They never missed anything, not even dad, and his job is pretty intense.” She paused, knowing that wasn’t what he wanted either. ”But, since I can tell by the look on your face, you wanted a better answer than all of that..” she said looking at him carefully, her voice coated with an undertone. ”My parents wanted children… they wanted a family… but they found out after several miscarriages.. that it wouldn’t happen for them…if you knew my mom.. she doesn’t take no for an answer. she researched, surrogates and adoption.. they had a surrogate lined up, but what they didn’t realize was that the young lady was actually pregnant.. she didn’t know either until she went for the check up and they told her.. she decided she wanted the baby… and they had to keep looking, they were in contact with several adoption agencies and they waited for a year, when they were suddenly alerted by one of them.. a private one in China…” she stopped there, since that was caught up with the full beginning. He wrote furiously to keep up. ”Did you have a hard time growing up? Knowing you were adopted?” he questioned. Calli wanted to roll her eyes and kick him in the shin. ”My parents let me know at a young age that I was adopted… They never tried to hide that from me.. I mean hell, they have a picture of my birth mother and me once I was cleaned up. They wanted me to know about my heritage and that she wanted the best for me..” she said trying to make that point clear to him. ”It never bothered me.. they’ve always been my parents… I’m lucky that I was adopted instead of handed off to an orphanage, god knows what would have happened to me in one of those places..” she said softly. He looked at her then his list of questions. How was it growing up with adopted parents? What difficulties did you face? Did you ever feel any sort of abandonment because of your birth mother giving you up?” he questioned her, ticking them off as he went. Calli sighed, shifting in her seat. ”Growing up was fun; my parents never emphasized on my ethnic differences from them…I mean my mom is Irish and Norwegian.. so she’s as pale as they come…but my dad is come crazy mixture of Native American, German, English, and Cuban… so he walks outside for five minutes and has an amazing base tan..” she said with a small laugh. ”But.. they never introduced me as their adopted daughter.. I was just, their daughter..” she said softly. ”I can’t say people are understanding.. they see my parents and they can be really insensitive… and they can say horrible things.. especially as a child, they had to make sure that I knew that my parents weren’t my real parents… But, my parents were always there.. and I won’t lie, my mom but a few people in their places..” she said the last bit with a small smirk. ”I didn’t have that many difficulties honestly.. I might have if my parents would have lied or made it into a huge deal, but no… they made sure that I understood and they were very understanding about all of my questions as a child… the only difficulty that I can think of off the top of my head.. is that everyone thought I would be amazing at math and science…” she rolled her eyes. ”I mean… I wasn’t amazing.. but I wasn’t stupid, when you have a parent that’s a teacher, they expect you to do well.. and if you don’t, the other teachers make sure they know you aren’t doing your best..” she added. She thought about his last question. ”When I was really little… like… still toddler and pre-school age, I was very attached to my parents.. but it wasn’t abandonment issues, it was that I always had more fun with them than I did in school… we would always go somewhere cool, like the beach or the zoo.. the aquarium…at school.. it wasn’t that fun..” she shrugged her shoulders. ”I know that my birth mother had to give me up because of the policy.. and I know she chose private adoption over the orphanage because my life would be significantly different…I don’t resent her for giving me up, I know she didn’t have the choice… and I wish I could thank her for giving me a better life..” she told him quietly. He nodded, pausing to write. ”Can you tell me about how you think this has shaped your life? Calli wasn’t sure of this question. ”Umm..Well… I’ve grown up with a nice family, never wanting for anything.. I was given a good education and allowed to do what I wanted in my life, in my career… I have a nice apartment… and two dogs and a cat who I love… My adoption changed my whole life. I could have been thrown into an orphanage, not taken care of.. and never adopted… but instead I was adopted by my wonderful parents.. and I owe everything to them.” she said simply. He nodded in understanding, that seemed to be a good enough answer for him. ”Would you ever consider adoption?” Calli nodded her head. ”Of course. I want a family one day… but.. say you know… ten years down the road that if that hasn’t happened for me.. I would adopt… even if it does happen to me.. I would probably want to adopt a child.. I understand how that can change a child’s life.. why wouldn’t I want to give that to another child?” she said softly. He nodded again, as he finished his writing he leaned forward and shut the recorder off. ”Thank you, Miss. Galvan.. I appreciate you taking the time to talk to me...It was rather interesting..” he said simply. Calli nodded her head as she stood up, shaking his hand. ”Thank you. Have a wonderful day.” she told him as she finally walked out of the room. |
